Currently Director of ICTA-UAB (www.icta.cat), he is Professor in the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) (www.uab.cat) and researcher in the ICTA-UAB. He leads the research group on Industrial Ecology called Sostenipra (www.sostenipra.cat), and the Fertilecity project (www.fertilecity.com), Integrated rooftop greenhouses: symbiosis of energy, water and CO2 emissions with the building – Towards urban food security in a circular economy. He is an expert in Circular economy, urban agriculture, Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), Material Flow Analysis (MFA), industrial ecology and waste management. 21 researchers (14 from 2011) have successfully finished and defended a PhD/doctorate thesis under his supervision. In addition to several book chapters, he has more than 150 publications in international journals from 2008.
Dr Xavier Gabarrell is one of its six guarantors of the ICTA ‘María de Maeztu’ Unit of Excellence 2015 (MDM-2015-0552) accredited as by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The award is the highest institutional recognition of scientific research in Spain and confirms ICTA-UAB as a leading research institute focused on environmental science and global change.
